My 9-Year-Old is Living His Best Soccer Life (And I’m Here for It)
The cleats are laced. The shin guards are strapped. My matcha is brewing.
Soccer season starts this week, and my 9-year-old son is bouncing off the walls with excitement. Literally.
I caught him practicing his “victory celebration” in the garage yesterday. Twice.
The New Team Energy
This year he’s on a new team. Fresh faces. New coach. That mix of nerves and pure joy that only comes when you’re 9 and the world feels full of possibilities.
“Dad, what if I score five goals in the first game?” he asked me while we organized his gear bag.
“Then I’ll be the loudest dad on the sideline,” I told him.
And I meant it.
Why This Matters More Than Soccer
Here’s the thing about youth sports that hit me while watching him sleep-kick invisible soccer balls last night:
It’s not really about soccer.
It’s about showing up.
Being present for the moments that matter to them. Even when it’s 7 AM on a Saturday and you’d rather be anywhere else.
My fitness goal as a dad? To keep up with my kids until they’re at least 20. Right now, at 33, I can still outrun them both. But this kid’s getting faster every season.
The Homeschool Dad Advantage
Working from home and homeschooling gives me something precious: flexibility. I can be at practice. I can volunteer for team snacks. I can be the dad who actually knows the names of his teammates.
My 5-year-old daughter tags along to most games. She might not be interested in soccer herself, but showing up is something we all get to do together.
The Real Victory
Win or lose this season, we’re already winning at the stuff that counts.
Quality time. Shared excitement. Being fully present for the things that light up their world.
Even if it means 6 AM wake-ups for tournament weekends. Even if it means my car permanently smells like grass stains and determination.
Soccer season is here. We’re ready.
